The Man With No Name

By Lev Azkhar

(Based on Mark 10: 46-52)

It was the Friday before Palm Sunday, outside the City of the Palms, Jerico, on the road that goes by the Judean Desert all the way up to Jerusalem.

By the road was sitting the blind beggar Bartimaeus, in his usual spot.

Bartimaeus is not a given name. It means in Hebrew "the son of Timaeus." People called this blind man just that: "the son of Timaeus."

He was in a very sad situation; he was blind, a beggar, and didn't even have a given name. Hardly anybody could be poorer.

But Bartimaeus treasured something in his mind and heart that made his life more bearable; he had a hope.

He had been hearing about this Jesus that called himself The Christ, a young Rabbi descended from King David, who cured the lame, resurrected the dead and had made several men to see again after been blind, like Bartimaeus.

Some day, this Jesus Christ is going to pass by right here—Bartimaeus tought—and I am going to be waiting for him, ready to meet him.

Blind, a beggar, no given name, but he had a hope. A strong, bright hope.

That Friday, the noise and the voices from the crowd coming up the road alerted Bartimaeus. Is the Nazarene, Jesus, the young Rabbi that calls himself the Anointed, people said.

The blind beggar was astonished, could it be him? —he thought— but the crowd proclaimed it. Yes! It is Him, at last, at long last.

With his hearing, Bartimaeus tried to determine where the Lord Jesus was among the coming crowd. "Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me!"—He began to shout—

Many coming with Jesus rebuked him and told him not to shout to The Lord Jesus. But he shouted even louder, "Son of David have mercy on me!"

Then the miracle started to happen. Jesus stopped and told the people close to him; "Call him."

They came to the blind man and said "Cheer up, on your feet, He is calling you." Bartimaeus jumped up, threw aside his cloak and was lead by hand through the people to come before The Lord.

"What do you want me to do for you"—the Lord Jesus asked him.

The voice sounded so close that he could have touched the Lord Jesus if he had stretched out his hand. Bartimaeus answered him. "Rabbi, I want to see."

Jesus Christ's answer was immediate. "Go—He said—your faith has healed you"

Immediately also, Bartimaeus empty eye sockets were filled, his eye lids were free and opened. He could see for the first time in his life, and he had the most beautiful first sight.

He saw Jesus Christ's face, smiling at him with love. He couldn't speak, he couldn't move, he just stayed there looking at the Lord Jesus turning to continue his way up.

Now a new man, with the gift of sight, Bartimaeus started right his new life. He followed the Lord Jesus on his journey.
